There are iconic football shirts, and then there’s the 1994 Chelsea away shirt—a bold, unmissable design that belongs in any serious collection of 90s football culture.

Worn by club legends like Ruud Gullit, this shirt perfectly captured an era of transition for Chelsea, just before the Premier League’s global boom kicked into full gear. Whether you remember the on-pitch swagger or just love a shirt that screams character, this kit deserves a closer look.

Here are five things we love about the 1994 Chelsea away shirt

That tangerine & Graphite Combo

Let’s be honest—this isn’t your average away kit colourway. The striking tangerine orange and graphite grey is about as 90s as it gets, and that’s exactly why we love it.  Terry Byrne the Chelsea kit man said Umbro came up with the combination as it wouldn't clash with any other Premier League team.

The reason it’s orange is because we wanted to make sure fans didn’t have to buy a third kit. We told Umbro to design a shirt which didn’t clash with any other club in the Premiership – and this is what they came up with. I think there’ll be thousands of supporters wearing it when the season gets started.

90s Umbro at their Peak

Umbro dominated kit design in the early 90s, and this is a classic example of why. The oversized collar, tonal patterns, and stitched badge all point to a time when detail and design were treated with equal importance. It’s an Umbro masterclass.

It was worn by Ruud Gullit

The shirt was released in 1994 under Glenn Hoddle but came to life in the following season.  Ruud Gullit and Mark Hughes arrived.  Gullits debut was away at Gillingham and he wore the orange and graphite.  Straight away people went mad for it with Ruud wearing it.

Textured fabric & sublimated print

The shirt isn't just bold in colour, it is rich in texture too. The sublimated Umbro pattern woven into the fabric gives it depth and dimension.

Instant conversation starter

Wear this shirt and be ready for questions—from Chelsea fans, football nostalgists, or just people with good taste. It’s one of those rare kits that’s divisive in all the right ways.   It was actually voted by FourFourTwo as one of the worst football shirts ever.  We disagree.  If you're into standing out, this is your shirt.
