In an exciting announcement, the New York Red Bulls have introduced their 2023 third kit, known as the Freestyle Kit. This innovative jersey pays tribute to the rich history of Hip-Hop, marking 50 years of groundbreaking culture and artistic expression.
The Freestyle Kit, meticulously crafted by the New York Red Bulls, serves as a homage to the pioneers of Hip-Hop who have left an indelible mark on the region and beyond. For half a century, MCs, DJs, Graffiti artists, Breakers, and Beatboxers have shaped the course of popular culture through their unique contributions.
This third kit aims to capture the essence of Hip-Hop's transformative journey and its significant impact on our society. As the world of music, art, and lifestyle has been revolutionized by the genre, the Freestyle Kit pays homage to the enduring legacy of Hip-Hop and its cultural influencers.
Kevin Maulbeck, the Art Director at New York Red Bulls, spoke passionately about the design process, sharing, βHip-Hop represents a global movement that spans 50 years and has seen many different styles and approaches. The Freestyle kit design had to be raw and authentic. Our vision was to let all the imperfections show through, which in turn, makes it perfect.β
Maulbeck further explained, βWe decided on focusing on one of the pillars of Hip-Hop β graffiti - more specifically in this case, on the writing. During the design process, we kept in mind the walls, doors and trains in our area covered in graffiti and stickers. When people see this jersey, itβs my hope that they think it is loud and true. The inspiration goes far beyond New York Hip-Hop, but at its core, thatβs exactly what it is: the local scene on display for the global audience.β
The Freestyle Kit is not just a jersey; it's a visual celebration of an artistic revolution that originated in the very streets where the New York Red Bulls play. As the team dons this unique kit, they pay tribute to the influence, creativity, and vitality of Hip-Hop culture.
